What to do in JB…as a family

LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort

Legoland Malaysia Hotel Exterior (1)

Like the force at LEGO Star Wars Miniland your love for LEGO is strong, though would you stay in a hotel made entirely of LEGO bricks? Thankfully you won’t have to affirm your love in quite such a potentially hazardous way when checking into JB’s LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort. So now you want the complete low-down on the resort, huh. Well, besides child friendly counter tops in the family restaurant that are “down low” know that you should consult the park’s events calendar as there are special themed activities on monthly such as the upcoming Halloween Brick-or-treat that runs from September through October.

Staying at the resort gets you more playtime in LEGOLAND not only because you’re right, smack-dab, onsite but also because hotel guests get to enjoy 2-days for the price of a 1-day ticket at the LEGOLAND theme park. All of the hotel’s themed rooms contains LEGO bricks for guests to build with as well as all the other (less important) standard amenities. So if you forget to pack anything not to worry, you can build a replacement!

Puteri Harbour

Hotel Jen Puteri Harbour Johor is a minute walk from Puteri Harbour Family Theme Park which is great for younger kids as the theme-park comprises Sanrio Hello Kitty Town and features other popular characters such as Thomas and Friends, Pingu, Barney, and Bob the Builder. If your trip revolves around LEGOLAND but don’t want to splurge on the theme-park’s resort, you can stay at this modern four star as it’s an 8 minute drive to the land of plastic building blocks. Families that don’t have a lot of space at home should take full advantage of the infinity pool overlooking the waterfront. After the sun sets, satisfy your hunger with a fine dinner of fresh seafood and steaks at the SkyBar, Bar & Restaurant. Parents can then opt to send tired kids off to bed and visit the wine bar to end a day of relaxation on a good note (I’m also talking about the flavour of the wine).

Right beside Hotel Jen is Somerset Puteri Harbour Nusajaya. Served at the resident’s lounge on the rooftop, your complimentary continental breakfast is complemented with harbourside view. Don’t go anywhere, after breakfast move laterally across to the infinity pool. With hooded chairs and tables scattered all over the sundeck, parents can read or catch up on emails while keeping a close eye on kids as they splash about in the water. Get your shopping fix at the nearby Mall of Medini, located adjacent to LEGOLAND.

What to do in JB…on a romantic getaway

Danga Bay

Thistle Johor Bahru Pool

From the soothing sounds waves make as they meet the shore to the extra special twinkle the stars have in the unobscured sky found only where land meets water, the beach spells out romance (literally every couple has written their initials in the sand and drawn a heart around at least once). You can rely solely on nature to help woo your love or there’s always a fantastic dinner to fall back on. As on any popular bayfront the options for seafood on Danga Bay span as long as the beach and, besides their aphrodisiac properties, the shellfish is plentiful and an absolute must while holidaying here!

Stay at Thistle Johor Bahru and you’ll have Danga Bay at your fingertips (a 10 minute walk from the hotel). With 14 room types ranging from Superior City View King to Presidential Suite (we love how naming conventions make the standard room actually seem grander than the most exclusive room) . Thinking about popping the question? If you’re the planning sort why not look into the hotel’s wedding options while you’re there (too practical to be romantic? Well, we think being well-planned is sexy ?).

What to do in JB…for retail therapy

Johor Bahru City Square

Johor Bahru with view of DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel (1)

In any city, the best place to let your shopaholic side run rampant is in the city centre. Johor Bahru City Square is the city’s most popular mall. Start by getting a lay of the land, taking it slow from floor to floor (there are six levels of retail stores). If you can effectively shop hop; if you’re still able to distinguish beige autumn jacket from beige autumn jacket, then good for you. Though if you’re like the rest of us and like taking your sweet time then we recommend taking palate cleanser breaks in the mall’s sixth floor outdoor garden. If you’ve got the stamina another popular mall, Komtar JBCC, is right next door. Besides it’s nuanced retail options, JB’s cafe scene also beckons many Singaporeans over the Johor-Singapore Causeway. Located a few minutes south of the mall on Jalan Dhoby, The Replacement Lodge & Kitchen is a cafe that has beds for lodgers and is what you’ve always wanted to own. Get a plate of churros and instagram it to us please! TheLanceScape’s guide to cafe hopping is amazing by the way, check it out here (remember what we said about hopping though).

Stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Johor Bahru (less than a 10 minute walk to JB City Square). With an outdoor pool and steam room you can relax knotted muscles acquired from carrying heavy  bags all day and fully enjoy your other more flattering fashion acquisitions.

Of all the meal types, brunch is synonymous with being on holiday. Don your Sunday best for Sunday brunch at the hotel’s Italian restaurant Tosca. While heavy Italian cuisine doesn’t offer much room to experience a lot of different dishes in one sitting, at Tosca you can have your fill of pizza, pasta, fish and pastries without feeling absolutely stuffed as they’re served in bite-sized morsels! And with rows of buffet servers containing dish after dish, the choice on what to eat will be tough – like going shopping all over again! Check out The Yum List’s review of Sunday Brunch at Tosca.

What to do in JB…on a business trip

Senai International Airport

Le Grandeur Palm Resort Johor Golf Course (1)

Have you ever pulled a Viktor Navorski (Tom Hanks’ character in The Terminal) and discovered there’s more to the airport than meets the red eye? If we told you the airport hotel is a five star resort that doubles as a golf and country club you won’t believe us, so check-in to Le Grandeur Palm Resort Johor and swing for yourself.

Planning a seminar or team building workshop? A golf ball’s throw away from Singapore, the 330 room resort is the ideal distance to take colleagues for a day or two (check out events packages here). All work and no play… aside from the distance the resort is the ideal location to relax and gather your million dollar thoughts. With an Olympic-size pool, an events team that organises theme parties, and practically every facility a luxury resort would have including tennis courts and a spa, you don’t want to feign sickness to get out of a company event held here! Feigning off jealous partners who want to join you is another matter entirely.
